A string is a series of characters which, when specified as data, is surrounded by single quotes, i.e. ' . To assign the value Hello world! to the variable A, in APL you would type

A←'Hello world!'

Where it is necessary to include a quote into a string, it must be doubled, e.g. to type in Don't do that to the variable B, in APL you would type

A←'Don''t do that'

Note that what follows after the letter n are two apostrophes, not a double quote.
